But in the modern and social media sense, it refers to ‘personal style’ ‘mood board’ or ‘visual style or theme’. To be more precise, it is the representation of your personality and your style. So today, we talk about the top 10 aesthetic styles that are commonly used by people around the world. 

1. Artsy

Artsy, also commonly referred to as art hoe, is the aesthetic style that is based on one’s love for art. It displays a connection to nature, painting, and flowers. It is known to celebrate diversity in art, regardless of one’s heritage or race. It involves various forms of visual art and nature, mostly including Polaroid pictures, plants (mainly ivy and succulents), acrylic paints, and Copic markers. 

2. Baddie

Baddie can be said to be a modern style of aesthetic since it is primarily associated with Instagram and beauty gurus on YouTube. It is usually centered, around being conventionally attractive by today’s beauty standards. In today’s time, it is very trendy, therefore, it has evolved various subgenres such as Insta baddie, luxurious baddie, retro baddie, vintage baddie, and much more. 

3. Grunge

Gunge is definitely the aesthetic style that is inspired by the darker side. It is dark and edgy and is known to depict glitches, vinyl records, cigarettes, neon lights, and the color black. Its roots can be traced back to the hard rock in Seattle in the 1980s. Most of these works demonstrate a sort of hopelessness and disenchantment with modern society.

4. Kawaii

Kawaii is actually the Japanese term for aesthetic, but now it has involved into whole another aesthetic style that refers to the unique concept affirming childish and young things. Kawaii style of aesthetics displays all the cute and adorable things, dominated by the color pink, ribbons, frills, fur, and other girly objects. When one thinks about kawaii, people mostly associate it with girls, but that is not completely true. 

5. Vaporwave

Originally vaporwave is a music genre branching from electronic Chillwave. But now it has been cultivated into a unique and iconic visual aesthetic. This style can be described, as a tongue-in-cheek commentary on modern consumerism and the soulless glamour of late capitalism. Like most of the other aesthetic styles, it will hit you with nostalgia and sends you to an era that once was. Its common theme includes anime, drug use, cartoons, computer graphics, sadness, and altered reality.

6. Vintage

Vintage is more of an umbrella term than aesthetic style, it refers to esthetics, which evokes a certain period from the past. It is adoration for old kinds of stuff, especially for the 40s, 50s, and 60s. It portrays crop tops, mom jeans, polaroid cameras, video games, and everything that comes to your mind when you think of old-fashioned pieces of stuff. 

7. Minimalist

Minimalist follows the less is more approach therefore that is what it focuses on. It was derived, from the reductive aspects of modernism. Many times it is interpreted as a reaction against abstract expressionism and a bridge to postminimal art practices. Minimalist style is composed of fewer objects, subtle colors, and simple design, in short words, something that fills the requirement. 

8. Yellow

The yellow aesthetic is something that is full of sunshine and honey. It is known to be a feminine style of aesthetics. This style is used to project happiness and peace. Objects commonly used here are the sun, sunflowers, honey, honey bees, lemon, and anything yellow you can think of. It has existed for a long time but has recently become very trendy. 

9. Retro

Retro aesthetic style is very similar to that of vintage, the major feature that differentiates them is that it focuses on the period of 70s, 80s, and 90s. It includes more saturated colors, such as bright reds, yellows, oranges, blues, and greens. Other elements you will find here are vinyl records, cassette tapes, funky sunglasses, and old cameras. It refers to being playful and bold but, at the same time, also casual. 

10. Camp

 The camp is a style that refers to something as appealing because of its bad taste and ironic value. It is said to disrupt many modernist notions of what art is and also what can be categorized, as high art by inverting aesthetic attributes such as beauty, value, and taste. If still, you didn’t get what it is about, well anything you will refer to as cheesy.
